I have been a registered Republican for all my life, however, I consider myself more of a conservative these days. What happened to true conservatism and why has the Republican Party turned its back on it? The most important question is will the party ever return to the true values and ideals of conservative ideology?
To begin, I have observed how the party has changed under the Bush Administration. When the Republicans took control of both the House and Senate, during the Clinton years, they managed to balance the budget and by the end of his presidency, Clinton left us with a surplus. Then President Bush won the election in 2000 and true conservatism began to slide down the slippery slope.
Conservatism died under the Bush Administration. Want proof? From the time he took office, President Bush expanded the federal budget by $700 Billion through the year 2008. That historic number is now being topped by President Obama and his "financial recovery plan" which will almost quadruple the deficit.
President Bush, not only expanded the federal budget, several of his plans show how he was in no way a conservative. It all began with the first bailouts. All most every true conservative would have voted against such a bill. Why should the American taxpayer be burdened by such spending programs?
There is a great amount of debt the Republicans created during President Bush's time in office. We are as much to blame for the deficit as anyone. The President wrote the check and our leaders failed us by signing it.
There are many definitions to be found for the word conservatism. To me, conservatism is an ideology that embraces individual opportunity, public order and traditional values. Today, the ones who claim to carry the conservative banner are nothing but big spenders. They are spending our children and grandchildren's future away and its time to stop the madness.
Now we have a new President and the madness is only getting worse. It is bad enough that President Bush started the spending free-for-all, now President Obama is out to top this spending spree and the American taxpayer, for generations to come, will be the ones writing the checks. In the Pay to the Order of line just fill in U.S Government and leave the amount line blank.
The Republican party must return to being true conservatives and apologize to to the American tax payer. Apologize for turning your back on those who voted for you and for running the country into debt with your liberal spending spree. Until that time, most of us will just become conservative Independants.
